about the program
Mission
To help women, ages 16 and up, to gain the confidence, knowledge, and skills to better prepare them not only to secure employment, but also to empower them with the knowledge to succeed once hired.
Participants will be trained in essential job-searching skills such as computer literacy, financial literacy, effective communication, transferable skills, resume-building, and interviewing.
10-Week Plan
Program Details
Week 1: Orientation
Welcome / Meet & Greet
Orientation is designed to welcome participants to the program and give them an opportunity to meet each other, as well as the volunteers with whom they will be working.
Assessment
Participants will complete a specialized skills assessment that will evaluate their job experience, interests, education, available resources, and household information. The assessment will ensure the participant’s skill level and be used as a benchmark to determine the participant’s development over time.
Week 2: Reading / Writing
In the US, an estimated 30 million people over the age of 16 are reading at the average level of an elementary school child. This workshop is designed to offer an overview and refresher of the basics of grammar and spelling. It also introduces participants to the basics of business communications and proper email etiquette.
Week 3: Computer Literacy
A working knowledge of computers is crucial in today’s workforce, as technological advances continue in almost every industry. Participants will learn how to navigate the Internet, use online resources to better their skills, and explore new skills outside the program.
Week 4: Basic Math
Having a firm understanding of basic math principles is essential for daily functioning. This workshop offers participants an overview of basic math principles that will be beneficial to many areas of life, such as balancing a checkbook, budgeting, or even the simple act of purchasing groceries.
Week 5: Financial Literacy
Financial literacy is defined as credit and debt management and the knowledge necessary to make financially responsible decisions. Participants will learn essential financial management skills such as paying bills on time, creating and adhering to a budget, and managing their debt to effectively plan for future investments.
Week 6: Effective Communication
Effective communication is crucial to improving relationships, securing a job, and succeeding in a job once hired. Participants will learn the fundamentals of effective communication to better understand and connect with those around them. Skills include nonverbal communication, empathy, learning to listen, and practicing positivity.
Week 7: Transferable Skills & Resume Building
Participants learn how to identify transferable skills they possess and how those skills can be used to help build a resume. Then participants will be introduced to the basics of resume writing, such as format, language, how to write a compelling summary, etc.
Week 8: Interview Skills
Participants will understand the entire interview process, starting from the moment contact is made with a potential employer and continues until an offer is made. Participants will learn how to prepare for an interview, tips and exercises to prepare them for the interview itself, and steps they should take after an interview to help them stand out among all other applicants.
Week 9: Workforce Education
Participants will learn how to handle situations such as working with a team, harassment, tension between coworkers, and how to manage conflict. For situations out of their control, participants will learn their rights as employees and what resources are available to them.
Week 10: Presenting a Professional You
Learning how to present onself and knowing what is considered appropriate in today’s workplace is a crucial step to securing employment. Participants learn how to best present themselves in an interview and other professional situations, and also become eligible to receive assistance in areas such as obtaining an interview outift and makeover recommendations.
