Virtual Crisis Counseling Triage
The process of quickly assessing a person’s mental‑health crisis remotely—through phone, video, chat, or telehealth platforms—to determine how urgent the situation is and what level of care is needed next.
What It Does
Virtual triage helps crisis workers:
- Screen symptoms and safety risks (like suicidal thoughts, severe distress, or unsafe environments)
- Determine urgency and whether the person needs immediate intervention
- Guide the person to the right level of care—from coping strategies to emergency services
Initial Contact
- Establishing rapport
- Ensuring the person is in a private, safe space to talk
Rapid Risk Assessment
Counselors evaluate:
- Suicidal or homicidal thoughts
- Severe emotional distress or psychosis
- Substance use
- Medical concerns
- Environmental safety
These are adapted for remote interaction.
Triage Decision
Based on risk, the counselor determines:
- Low risk: coping tools, referrals
- Moderate risk: safety planning, urgent outpatient care
- High risk: mobile crisis team, ER, or emergency services
Stabilization & Safety Planning
- Helping the person calm down
- Creating a personalized safety plan
- Identifying supports
Connection to Ongoing Care
- Referrals to therapy or crisis programs
- Follow-up arrangements
Why Virtual Triage Matters
- Expands access for people who can’t travel
